The reappointments have been conducted in accordance with the Commissioner for Public Appointments’ Code of Practice on appointments for public bodies.

CAFCASS was set up in April 2001. They are a non-departmental public body and are the largest employer of social workers in England. CAFCASS consists of professionally qualified social work staff (Family Court Advisor’s – FCA’s) who become involved in a case once an application regarding a child has been made to the Court. This could include when children are subject to an application for care or supervision proceedings by social services, an adoption application or when parents are separating and make an application to the Court because they cannot agree on arrangements for their children.

FCA’s work exclusively in the Family Courts and they provide Judges with advice, information and recommendations to ensure that a safe decision is made regarding each child’s future. This can include meeting and working with the children who are the subject of the application to find out their wishes and feelings. CAFCASS are an independent body.
